The winning joint venture consists of Itinera, Condotte and Grandi Lavori Fincosit, with Seteco Ingegneria as subcontractor. The three Italian Construction Companies and the Italian Bridge Design Consultant come with decades of experience from all types of international infrastructure projects. A total of four joint ventures tendered for the task worth approximately 280 million Euros.
International attention
At the Danish Road Directorate, Project Director Niels Gottlieb praises the high quality provided by all the four tenderers and, he is pleased by the convincing winning project.
“We are very pleased to see the significant international attention that the Storstrøm Bridge project, has had all the way through the process. This is also reflected in the four joint ventures which have tendered for the task. They are all highly qualified with many years of international experience and successful projects behind them. Still, the winning joint venture submitted the best project, based on price and quality,” says Niels Gottlieb.
Local construction site
As a central part of the project the winning joint venture has located its production of bridge elements on the small island of Masnedø, in the immediate vicinity of the bridge construction site. The area has been purchased under compulsory acquisition in connection with the project for the future bridge and, thus has become accessible for the tenderers as a possible work site during the project.
The Danish Road Directorate expects to sign a contract with the winning Contractor before the end of the year.
Meanwhile, the planning begins for the extensive work areas and the working harbour on Masnedø, before the construction of the bridge commences in autumn 2018.
A bridge for high-speed trains
The Storstrøm Bridge connects Zealand with Falster via Masnedø and will form an important part of the upgrading of the railway line between Copenhagen and Rødby, and further on to the Fehmarn Belt Link to Germany. The existing bridge is in poor condition, and forms a bottleneck in the transport corridor to Germany.
When completed in 2022, the new bridge will carry two tracks of high-speed trains, up to 200 km/h, a two-lane regional road and a combined cycle and footpath. With its length of 4 km and a pylon height of 100 m, it will become Denmark’s third largest bridge, after the Øresund Bridge and the Great Belt Bridge.
The total budget for the project, including demolition of the existing Storstrøm Bridge, is approximately 4.1 billion Danish kroner DKK (550 million Euros).
To date, the European Union has supported the planning phase of the project and EIA study with 14.5 million Euros.
The other three joint ventures tendering for the Storstrøm Bridge were:
- Storstrømsbroen Contractors JV
Per Aarsleff A/S – Ed. Züblin AG Rambøll A/S Strabag SE
- Rizzani de Eccher s.p.a – N.V. Besix S.A. – Acciona Infraestructuras S.A.
